I’m not much into health food. I am into champagne.

My name is illini_girl, and I don’t like to eat most things that are good for me.

That actually isn’t completely true, as I love fruits and vegetables.  I just don’t like anything “Light” or “Diet”. . . blech. . . from everything from beer to salad dressing, I just can’t stomach it.

I love it when people tell me, “You can’t even tell that this is diet/lite!!!”  Wanna bet?  I can tell.

  • My mom tried to switch to lite miracle whip once. . . I didn’t notice the jar, but when I tasted it. . . YUCK.  That’s not gonna work.  (Which is a whole other topic in itself, but we are a miracle whip family.  I can’t do regular mayo whatsoever.  Is anyone else in my boat?)
  • I can’t stand “diet” pop (a.k.a. soda).  BLECH, BLECH, double BLECH!  I don’t buy this whole, “You get used to it thing.”  I’ve never been able to get used to grossness.  Splenda = also gross.
  • I did a blog post earlier about how Kraft changed my ranch dressing earlier this year.  At first, I assumed they just had slick new packaging. . . however, it tasted different, and I didn’t like it.  After my third time eating it, I decided I had to throw it away, which was sad because I’d grown rather attached to Kraft.  Bummer.  Nicole then wrote me and informed me that they took preservatives and other bad for you stuff out of the dressing.  Yes, this made perfect sense!  Of course this was why I didn’t like it anymore!
  • Another sad thing happened a few weeks ago.  I LOVE Campbell’s Selects soup. . . this chicken one, in particular. . . however, now they have changed this into a healthy line. . . and it’s AWFUL.  Not only does it have NO taste. . . but it’s no taste with a hint of nastiness!  GIVE ME BACK MY SODIUM, ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, AND MSG, DANG IT!  Now, as you can see, they are still advertising the soup that I like on the website. . . but I can no longer find it in the store.  :(   It’s really too bad because while it may not be the most healthy thing, it was a way for me to get some protein and veggies for lunch.  (Luckily, for me, I was a cooking fool this weekend and made two types of delicious soup to freeze and bring into work!. . . I’ll show you, Campbell’s!)

In this same spirit of shunning all things good for me, I thought a few weeks ago that I would start taking pictures of the piles of candy wrappers that I accumulate while I’m blogging.  Now, a few weeks ago, I had one pile that was RIDICULOUS. . . I didn’t capture that night, unfortunately. . . but here are a few of the shots I got.  I would say that *sadly* they are below average to average nights. . . The hurricane did kick me down for a while, but fear not. . . I was back on that chocolate horse by mid-week!

(Must have gotten home from work really late this night, as this is way below average.)

As you can see, I am currently doing a hugs and almond hershey’s kiss mix. . . this is because Hershey’s stopped making the chocolate that I’d been eating for the past three years, and I’ve had to resort to mixing.  Yes, this was so devistating, that I was buying up all of the candy at the stores that was left, AND Liz was shipping it from California when she could find it.  I had 15 bags of chocolate in my freezer at one point, but when you go through ~1 bag/week, it doesn’t go very far.  (. . . and yes, I even WROTE hershey’s. . . to which they didn’t reply because they probably think that I’m a psycho.)

I do LOVE one thing that is healthy for me (and I MUST plug it!). . . my daily Lara bar.  Thanks to queenlizzle for turning me on to these and changing my life!.  I LOVE cherries. . . and the cherry pie Lara bar literally tastes like I’m eating a cherry pie.  Apple pie is also delicious.  They are soft goodness, and they are healthy!  They are a good source of fiber, one serving of fruit. . . and the ONLY ingredients of this one are dates, almonds, and unsweeted cherries.  Yes, they are expensive. . . but they are like crack. . . nutritious crack.

Okay, time to clean up these wrappers from tonight and go to bed. . . ;)

  1. This post cracked me up…it’s great to have you back blogging about “normal” stuff!

You’re a lot braver than I am… Last summer I had a bit of an addiction to flavor ices and I would make piles of the wrappers. There’s no way I would’ve been able to take (much less post) pictures of the “evidence” ahahah!

  2. this made me smile! as i’ve been trying to eliminate some bad things from our diets, it’s been interesting trying to find a substitute for stuff we’ve always eaten. however, trader joe’s makes great tortilla chips, so that one is taken care of!

what hershey’s candy were you eating that isn’t available anymore?

  3. You can overcome not liking Diet Pop and I have done it.

    1. Stop drinking all pop for 6 months
    2. The first diet drinks you should have should be Diet root beer, diet dr. pepper and coke zero.
    3. After drinking the above drinks for a few months, then it is ok to start drink diet coke (ONLY FROM A CAN – very important)
    4. After a few months, all diet pop out of a can should taste a-ok. ***
    5. I can still taste a diet taste with all fountain pops – so they are not my favorite.

My book on my five step plan for switching to Diet Pop should be out in time for Christmas!
***Since switching to diet pop, I refuse to try regular pop because I’m pretty sure that I will think that it is still very good!

  4. i am the ultimate in eating turnaround, which is to say that i used to live on cow, pig, and pixie sticks, and now i am a vegetarian and basically eat NOTHING bad for me. i am truly freakish.

    what happened?
i dont even know. it spiraled out of control. but now candy tastes weird to me. IT TASTES WEIRD. i used to live on it. so i guess the moral of the story is that your taste buds can be retrained. but you will probably go mental attempting it. so don’t.

  5. Oh, Hersey’s is making candy corn kisses for halloween. They are wicked awesome!!!

  6. I can’t really do diet pop either. For a while, I was doing diet coke, however once I stopped drinking pop altogether and then tried to start drinking diet again, it gave me heart burn, so I gave it up! Now if I’m drinking pop, it’s just regular!!

  7. Nicole–It was Hershey’s Nut Lovers. . . mmm, little candy bars consisting of. . . white choc w/ pecans, creamy milk choc w/ cashews, milk choc w/ toasted almonds, and milk choc. w/ toasted peanuts. Such a nice mix.

To my sister. . . here is the biggest problem with your plan:
    1. Stop drinking all pop for 6 months

No way, Jose. I’m not giving it up for 6 mo. . . and if I got off it for 6 mo. (as Staci wisely pointed out), why wouldn’t I just STAY off altogether?

Also, I don’t even *want* to like the taste of diet. . . so I’m not signing up for your plan. Thank you, though. . . you may have helped other readers that want to switch and are willing to quit cold turkey for six months!

  8. [...] the candy piles?  It’s been a BAD week of candy [...]
